FAQs

Everything you need to know about the Registered Disability Savings Plan

What is the RDSP?

The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) was introduced by the Government of Canada to help families save for the long-term financial security of individuals living with disabilities who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).

What are the eligibility criteria for the RDSP?

1. Be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC);
2. Be between ages 0 and 49 to receive grants and bonds;
3. Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN);
4. Be a resident of Canada.

What are the eligibility criteria for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?

A person is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) for a given year if they have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions. To qualify, the T2201 form – Disability Tax Credit Certificate – must be completed by a qualified practitioner and submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency for approval.

Individuals who wish to open a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) but have not yet applied for the DTC must first be approved for the DTC before opening an RDSP.

How do you open a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)?

Fill out our online form to start the process of opening your RDSP.

Afterward, one of our representatives will contact you to answer your questions and complete the setup of your Registered Disability Savings Plan.

How do contributions work?

Once the RDSP is established, you can deposit money into the account at any time.

The lifetime contribution limit for a beneficiary is $200,000. There is no annual contribution limit, and the full $200,000 can be contributed in a single year.

Contributions are not tax-deductible, but investment growth is tax-deferred as long as the funds remain in the plan.

Contributions must stop when the beneficiary turns 59. However, contributions can be made until the end of the year in which the beneficiary turns 59.

How can I contribute to a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)?

Once your Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) has been set up with a rdsp.ca advisor, you can contact us directly to make contributions to the account.

You can also set up pre-authorized payments to automatically contribute a fixed amount on a recurring basis.

What if I don’t have money to invest in an RDSP?

You may be eligible for the Canada Disability Savings Bonds. These bonds are deposited into your RDSP without requiring any personal contributions. The government can contribute up to $10,000 upon opening the account.

What are the two government assistance grants?

In addition to personal savings, the federal government offers the Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG) and the Canada Disability Savings Bond (CDSB).

An RDSP is eligible for both the CDSG and CDSB until December 31 of the year in which the beneficiary turns 49.

What is the Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG)?

The Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG) consists of matching contributions that the government deposits into the beneficiary’s RDSP to help grow their savings.

If the annual net family income is under $100,000, the government contributes 300% on the first $500 and 200% on the next $1,000. This means you can contribute $1,500 and receive $3,500 from the government.

If the income is higher, the government contributes 100% on contributions, up to $1,000 per year.

For a minor beneficiary, the net family income is based on the parents’ income. Once the beneficiary reaches adulthood, it is based on the beneficiary’s income and that of their spouse, if applicable. The income thresholds are indexed annually to inflation.

What is the grant limit?

The total amount of CDSGs is capped at $70,000 per beneficiary and they are granted until the end of the year in which the beneficiary turns 49, as long as they remain a resident of Canada. For the CDSB, the maximum eligible amount is $20,000.

Since there is no annual contribution limit for a Registered Disability Savings Plan, you can contribute up to $200,000 in a single year. However, if you contribute the full amount at once, you forgo the CDSG in future years.

People who plan to contribute to an RDSP should consult a reei.ca specialist to determine whether it is more advantageous to make a lump-sum contribution or periodic contributions. Depending on expected returns, the beneficiary’s age, and anticipated financial needs, it may be preferable to make smaller annual contributions. A large one-time contribution allows for a longer period of tax-sheltered growth, while spreading contributions over several years maximizes the CDSG ($70,000).

What happens if the beneficiary dies or is no longer eligible due to disability?

Upon the death of the RDSP beneficiary, the plan must be closed no later than December 31 of the following year. Any grants and bonds paid into the plan in the preceding 10 years must be repaid to the government. Investment growth, grants, and bonds are taxable in the hands of the beneficiary’s estate, while the original contributions are tax-free.

If the beneficiary is no longer eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), the grants and bonds remain in the account. The RDSP stays open, but no new contributions can be made, and the account is no longer eligible for grants, bonds, or the carry-forward of unused grant and bond entitlements.
